In the mountains, desert, and river valleys of Big Bend, you’d expect to find the usual camping and nature features, such as river rafts, tents, rocks, trees, and so on. But the truth is, what can be found in the park is next to limitless. This week, we bring you two examples of what people have found in and around Big Bend.

Searching to Save Lives

On Wednesday, June 15^th park officials were made aware of three Mexican Nationals that had crossed illegally into the park and were in need of help. Rangers came to the rescue, but then found out that there had originally been seven who’d crossed, and they’d run out of water the day before and had split up when they realized they were lost. That meant that there were potentially four more men in the park in need of help. The search was on!

Two more of the undocumented aliens were found quickly, and they were treated on the spot and sent away in an ambulance. Sadly, the sixth was found dead, and the seventh was never located. It was suspected that number seven had already crossed back to Mexico.

The park rangers often work hard to find and help lost, hurt, or stranded campers. Check out the daily report for today to see a list of some of the things they’ve had to do this week. While it’s sad that one of the Mexical Nationals didn’t make it, thanks to the efforts of the Rangers and Immigration Agents, the others made it out of a bad situation all right.

Don’t Forget Your Water!

This story is a good reminder for all of us, too. The illegals had so much trouble because they’d run out of water. Temperatures at the park can get way over 100 during the day, and our dry season stubbornly hangs around. Whether you’re an undocumented border-crosser or just an average camper, for goodness’ sake, bring enough H2O.

Bison Bones Found

Something else that was found in the Chihuahuan Desert, not far from the Mexico Border—Ancient Bison Bones. Archeologists are very excited about this discovers for two reasons: First, this is the first time Prehistoric Bison have been found in the area, and second, two very different cultures lived nearby. Scientists are hoping that the bones, along with prehistoric artifacts found in the same region, will tell us more about these peoples’ ways of living and why they lived so differently from each other.

What Will You Find?

So, realistically, you may not go to Big Bend hoping to become a hero that saves lost campers, and you may not care at all about prehistoric bones. But the fact remains, you are likely to discover a lot more than sun and dirt in Big Bend, and that’s why visiting the park this summer may be an adventure you can’t afford to miss!
