Agua Fria Mtn. - Agua Fria Mountain's steep, eroded sides rise 1,500 feet above the surrounding Chihuahua Desert floor.

Alpine - Alpine is the gateway to the Big Bend, located in a wide valley in the foothills of the Davis Mountains.

Alpine Border Patrol Checkpoint - Mile 14.0 Immigration and Naturalization (Border Patrol) Checkpoint. Head south, please slow down to 40 miles per hour and proceed with caution past the checkpoint.

Alpine Roadside Park - Convenient roadside parks with picnic tables, trash receptacles, lots of shade and great views are located at miles 17.1 and 25.9 south of Alpine.

Big Bend National Park - The 800,000 acre national park is the largest protected area of the Chihuahuan Desert in the United States.

Big Bend Ranch State Park - A 275,000 acre preserve managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in Brewster and Presidio Counties.

Big Hill - Locally referred to as the Big Hill, there is a wide turn out, south bound side at the top with a good view of the Alpine Valley

Black Gap Wildlife Management Area - The area around the headquarters is good for typical desert-scrub birds, but the stock tanks located in the gap behind this complex can attract a variety of species, especially when full.

Boquillas Canyon - Boquillas Canyon is the longest and deepest canyon in Big Bend National Park.

Castolon - Buildings from the early 1900's farming community including an old store, troop barracks, and private residences.

Chisos Mountains - The Chisos Mountains are the heart of Big Bend National Park. They extend twenty miles from Punta de la Sierra in the southwest to Panther Junction in the northeast.

Colorado Canyon - Colorado is a canyon of a different color. Unlike all the other river canyons in Big Bend, Colorado is carved from volcanic material.

Dagger Flats - This improved dirt road is navigable by most cars, and takes the visitor on a tour through a forest of Giant Dagger Yucca.

Dog Canyon Trail - Interpretive Turn Out east side of highway : Camel Experiment Exhibit.

Double Mills - Double Mills interpretive site has a large pull out on the east side of 118.

Elephant Mtn. - Elephant Mountain rises 1,265 feet above State Highway 118, reaching an elevation of 6,225 feet above sea level.

Elephant Mtn. WMA - At mile 26.2 is the turn off to Elephant Mountain State Wildlife Management Area.

Flash Floods - Interpretive Turn Out Flash Floods exhibit, east side of highway, has a great photo of local flooding, one that covers the adjacent bridge.

Fossil Bones Exhibit - The exhibits highlight the fossil rich sediments that gives the curious traveler a glimpse at the ancient environments that once existed in Big Bend.

Hen Egg Mtn. - Hen Egg Mountain, the visible portion of a massive limestone uplift, rises 1,720 feet above State Highway 118.

Hot Springs - Located beyond the Hot Springs Historic Walk, a soak in the hot springs can provide a relaxing end to a day of hiking.

La Linda - La Linda Coahuila is across the Rio Grande from Heath Canyon Texas.

Lajitas - Lajitas is on the western edge of Big Bend National Park in southwestern Brewster County.

Lower Canyons - Below Boquillas Canyon and the boundary of Big Bend National Park, lies the third longest wilderness river section in the continental US.

Marathon - Marathon is the eastern gateway to the Big Bend, featuring a range of hotels and eateries.

Marathon Border Patrol Checkpoint - Mile 4.8 Immigration and Naturalization (Border Patrol) Checkpoint. Heading south, please slow down to 40 miles per hour and proceed with caution past the checkpoint.

Marathon Roadside Park - Mile 10.2 Rest area with two covered tables also features an interpretive marker describing the Caballos Formation.

Mariscal Canyon - Mariscal is the most remote of the Park River Canyons, and the only way to see it is by river.

Old Marathon Rd - Mile 45.4 Turn off to the west, dirt road to Terlingua Ranch Lodge 23 miles.

Packsaddle Mtn. - Elevation 4,656 feet above sea level, 1,180 feet above State Highway 118.

Panther Junction - The Visitor Center includes exhibits and a book sales area. Entrance passes and backcountry and river use permits are available.

Persimmon Gap Visitor Facility - Mile 41.4 Persimmon Gap National Park Visitor Facility and entrance station.

Post Pena Colorado Park - Year-round water attracts a variety of wildlife to this little known county-city park.

Rio Grande Village - Rio Grande Village offers a National Park Visitor Center (closed summers), a convenience store, gasoline, laundromat, pay showers, and a full service campground.

River Road - Camino del Rio, or River Road is state highway 170 between Lajitas and Presidio.

Rosillos Mnt. Ranch - Mile 55.0 Turnoff to Rosillos Mountains Ranch.

Rosillos Mountains - The highest point in the mountains is Rosillos Peak, which rises 5,445 feet above sea level, some 2,165 feet above the Rosillos Mountain Ranch, just to the east.

Santa Elena Canyon - Santa Elena Canyon is one of the best-known natural features in Big Bend National Park.

Santiago Peak - With an elevation of 6,524 feet above sea level, it rises 2,700 feet above State Highway 118, nine miles west.

Sierra Del Carmen View - Mile 59.3 Turnout southbound side with view of Sierra del Carmen.

Stillwell Junction - Mile 39.0, turn left on Texas 2627, for Stillwell Store and Hallie's Hall of Fame Museum.

Study Butte - Terlingua/Study Butte area is the center of visitor services for Big Bend National Park and outlying communities.

Terlingua Ghost Town - Historic Terlingua is often referred to as the "Ghost Town". Although Historic Terlingua is all private property, much of it is open to the public.

Terlingua Ranch Lodge - Terlingua Ranch Lodge is a friendly outpost bordering on the remote northern part of Big Bend National Park.

Terlingua Ranch Turnoff - Mile 61.7 Turn-off to Terlingua Ranch Lodge is well marked. Road is paved for 13 miles, the last 3 miles to the Lodge is a good dirt road.

The Marathon Plateau - The extensive plateau grasslands east and north of Marathon offer a respite from the surrounding desert scrub and attract a different set of species.

The Rio Grande - Guided canoe and raft trips on the Rio Grande are one of the best ways to experience the Big Bend.

Turnout on Hwy 118 - At mile 52.4 is the turn off to the west to a facility that process sodium bentonite for shipment. (Private property, do not enter)

Turnout Santiago Peak - Mile 22.3, Paved turnout on east side with a view of Santiago Peak to the east.

Willow Mtn. - The peak reaches an elevation of 3,830 feet above sea level and towers over 1,000 feet above State Highway 118.
